REVIEW: Swanky Tunes @ Playhouse – 2/10/12

On Friday, the Russian group Swanky Tunes graced Playhouse Hollywood with their presence, shaking the walls with their big room and progressive sounds for another Dirty Sexy House Friday night at the venue. They started a mini tour through North America, kicking it off by playing in Orange County the night before. Read about their set and see some more photos after the jump!

It’s not everyday you get to see top international producers playing in North America, but when they come through, you know it’s going to be good. The Hollywood club-goers were excited to finally see Swanky play, lining up early and ready to party. As the resident DJ S.Co warmed up the crowd, you could sense that there was a tense energy in the air as people anxiously awaited the performance from the Russians. Finally, as the LED board changed above the booth, the place went wild. From that moment on, it was nothing but pure energy.

The group played plenty of their own tracks, as well as popular originals and remixes from a few well known producers. As the buildup to Hardwell’s “Spaceman” began to fade in, we already knew we were in for a good one.

After, they dropped their new original “The Legend,” which they made with Matisse & Sadko. We love this track, and so did the crowd.

The best thing about Playhouse is hard to say, because there are so many. From the glow wands, to the dancers, to the people dressed in muppet costumes, something exciting always happens. To top things off, they have some of the best tuned sound (in our opinion) when compared to most Hollywood venues, and the Funktion One sound definitely helps. It was exciting to hear the new tune “Troll” from Swedish newcomers Qulinez on those massive speakers.

Before we had the chance to wonder what was coming next, the familiar vocals from Dirty South’s remix of “Coming Home” came in. Halfway through the vocal buildup, Daft Punk’s Aerodynamic started playing. It was complete confusion at this point. Just when the drop was coming in, Swanky Tunes threw a wildcard by mashing the new Hard Rock Sofa track “Quasar” into the bootleg. There wasn’t a single moment that made you want to stand still.

It was hard to be upset when their set was over because of how happy we were the entire way through. Swanky Tunes enjoyed their evening as well, making sure that everyone was on the same page. Check out the full album on the Playhouse Facebook page. Photos taken by Playhouse.
